Richard L. Ballard – Chief Software Scientist, is a physicist by
education and innovative technology pioneer by vocation. For the past
30 years Dr. Ballard has been a leader in knowledge science and
semantic technology development. While at UC Irvine, Ballard was
cited for the first application of artificial intelligence to
conceptual learning (Expert Systems in Business). As a founder of
Apple Education Foundation with Steve Jobs in 1978, he began work on
semantic web applications in support of educational publishing and
game development. His research lead him into Star Wars missile
defense programs, which emerged in the early 1990's into the
development of semantic web and decision management tools that have
been deployed at the highest levels of government. During the 80's &
90's, Ballard completed 50 knowledge projects of national importance
for the DoD, USNAVY, USAF, NASA, DEA, FAA, Office of the White House,
private industry and others. Ballard's revolutionary knowledge
science and declarative semantic technologies offer a real option to
move the world from the Information Age into the Knowledge Age.
Ballard has received 128 software citations, developed 21 Educational
Software Workshops, 3 Management Software Workshops and delivered a
current 10 Week Professional Knowledge Engineering at UCI. Ballard
has been published in 35 publications and technical reports. Ph.D. UC
Berkeley; Fellow NASA Institute for Space Physics, Columbia University.
Dennis L. Thomas, Executive Vice President- has worked with Dr.
Ballard since 2002 providing research, analysis and technical writing
on theory-based semantics and Mark 3. Thomas has spearheaded the
development and implementation of KF’s strategic business plan and
operational infrastructure. His background includes more than 28
years private and public business experience as a senior executive.
Experience includes P&L responsibility, strategic business and market
planning, operations, marketing and sales of complex product and
services, and IT infrastructure. Technical skills include database
management systems, work-flow analysis, process modeling and
implementation, eCommerce. Mr. Thomas has a BA from the University of
California, Irvine.
ABOUT KNOWLEDGE FOUNDATIONS, INC.
Knowledge Foundations, Inc. is a semantic software engineering
company and inventor of a revolutionary, 3rd generation, semantic
technology called Mark 3 Knowledge Platform. Mark 3 enables cost
effective acquisition, long-term retention, and enterprise-wide
application of proprietary knowledge to optimize decision support,
theory-based job training, intelligent business process and
infrastructure data integration and storage.
Non-programming professionals develop knowledge stores from the very
books, manuals, documents, applications and databases that enterprise
operations are based on, to include the vital knowledge of employees
and subject experts. The Mark 3 Builder self-builds and organizes the
concepts, ideas and thought patterns from these resources, and the
theory that justifies their relatonships, into highly integrated,
machine understandable knowledge stores.
Intelligence is interwoven into every concept, idea and thought
pattern, allowing the Mark 3 Constraint Browser to reason across
missions, values, objectives, strategies, policies, procedures,
functions, tasks and processes to precisely answer "who," "what,"
"when," "where" and "how much" data questions, and "how," "why" and
"what if" resoning questions, on-the-fly, no matter how complex the
knowledge domain.
Mark 3 introduces the first knowledge platform to organically model
cross-functional, cross-departmental enterprise knowledge to
significantly increase efficiency, performance, profitability and
sustained competitive advantage, while decreasing labor, operating
and equipment costs. Commercial realease of Mark 3 is scheduled for
2009.
Synopsis: People make decisions based on values, beliefs and theoretical
understanding learned from enculturation, education, life experience
and analytical thought. Self-consistent proofs, and logic, play a
lessor role. Science, engineering, business, law and other
disciplines require more rigorous foundations for decision- making,
which include empirical evidence, proven processes, rules,
methodologies and standards, along with a myriad of variables.
This presentation address a new technology founded on a "knowledge
science" that defines that "Knowledge = Theory + Information," and
that the full spectrum of physical and metaphysical concepts can be
explicitly represented within the machine environment to create
SYSTEMS THAT KNOW.
Attendees will gain insight into a new knowledge architecture that
self-builds and organizes content without pre- defined structure or
indexing, and how "language of thought" knowledge stores reason
rationally to answer "how," "why" and "what- if" questions on-the-fly,
no matter how complex the knowledge domain. Attendees will have the
opportunity to sign-up for a free, pre-release limited beta copy due
in 2009.
